Returning to New York for its eighth appearance, Harlem Hafla is an exciting day of belly dance workshops and performances---with soul! Harlem Hafla brings daytime dance workshops and an evening stage performance with an accomplished lineup of dancers, Uptown!
Our headliner this year is Master Performer and Instructor, Rachid Alexander! Rachid is an internationally acclaimed male belly dancer known for his powerful stage presence, technical precision, and mesmerizing performances. Originally from Curaçao, Rachid blends traditional Middle Eastern dance with his own unique flair, expanding the boundaries of the art form. With years of classical training and deep cultural respect, he has performed across Europe, the Americas, and the Middle East, earning a dedicated global following. His dynamic style combines strength, grace, and fluidity, captivating audiences and inspiring dancers of all genders. In addition to performing, Rachid is a sought-after instructor and choreographer, committed to sharing the joy, discipline, and expressive power of belly dance with the world.
The workshops, led by our headliner, take place at Riverbank State Park (679 Riverside Dr, New York, NY 10031). Later that evening, an array of accomplished belly dance performers take the stage, with a special performance by our headlining instructor, Rachid! He is also teaching a workshop on Sunday at NoMAA Studios (4140 Broadway Between 175th and 176th Streets).
Workshops are $40 and show tickets are $25.
Please note that all tickets are will-call and we do not give out paper tickets. Also, we do not give out refunds after the event if you cannot make the event.

ORIENTAL TECHNIQUE AND COMBINATIONS

In this workshop, Rachid will teach you several of his signature moves and techniques. From the basic Egyptian moves to his advanced, snaky style and layered undulations. Join the workshop to polish your technique, learn new combinations and fluid transitions.

Learn an intricate choreography on an Egyptian entrance piece with a variety of rhythms and instrumentation. Enhance your skills and fluidity with Rachid's choreo combinations! Please bring a chiffon veil.

In this class, Rachid will teach a small Baladi choreography full of juicy, earthy moves and some steps that are typical for the Baladi character. Prior to the choreo, there is a short lecture about this native, Egyptian dance.
